With so much to consider, piecing together the perfect cosy bed set can be tricky. But today we’re here to talk about just two comfort elevating essentials – flat sheets vs fitted sheets.

While both elevate the sinkable feeling of our mattresses by giving them a sumptuously smooth top layer, they do have slight differences that might mean you prefer one to the other.

In this blog, we will share all you need to know so you can choose the right sheet for you. From looking at what a flat sheet is, and what a fitted sheet is, to care tips for keeping whichever you choose in tip-top condition, we’ve got all your flat sheet vs fitted sheets questions covered.

What is a flat sheet?

First, let’s explore what a flat sheet is.

A flat sheet is a large rectangular sheet that rests underneath the duvet. The flat sheet is typically used to provide an extra layer of comfort between you and your duvet while also keeping your duvet cover protected.

Flat sheets can also be spread out over or tucked underneath your mattress in place of a fitted sheet. But you could also choose to sleep with a flat sheet over you during the summer months to stay cosy but cool.

Aside from being silky soft and easy to use, there are many more benefits to using a flat sheet:

  • Soft cotton flat sheets act as a layer between you and your duvet, elevating your sleep by providing extra warmth and comfort.
  • You can achieve a luxury hotel-inspired feel by adding a flat sheet to your bed.
  • Flat sheets are easy to remove and wash so you can always enjoy fresh bedding.
  • As a flat sheet acts as a protective layer between you and your duvet, your duvet cover will be protected so you won't need to wash it as frequently.
  • A flat sheet can be used as a blanket too, offering an extra layer of warmth without weighing down your duvet.

What is a fitted sheet?

Up next, fitted sheets! A fitted sheet is a piece of material with elasticated corners so it can easily be pulled over your mattress and secured in place for a snug fit.

Acting as a layer between you and your mattress, fitted sheets keep your mattress clean, protects it from sweat and dust, and provides an extra layer of sumptuous comfort while you sleep.

But if you want extra protection for your mattress, or if you’re looking to bring even more comfort to your bed spread, you can check out a mattress protector and mattress topper! The elasticated edges of fitted sheets are great for stopping these from shifting around underneath as you sleep.

Of course, there is more to a fitted sheet than simply holding mattress protectors in place. Using a fitted sheet gives you tons of benefits, including:

  • A fitted sheet provides an unwrinkled, smooth surface to sleep on, making your bed look even more luxurious.
  • It's easy to use a fitted sheet - simply slip the elasticated corners over your mattress for a snug fit.
  • You won't need to worry about cleaning your mattress protector or topper as frequently, as the extra layer protects them and your mattress.
  • Fitted sheets are easy to remove and clean, when you wash the rest of your bedding.

What is a deep fitted sheet?

Like the sound of our fitted sheets? Well, let us introduce you to our deep fitted sheets!

A deep fitted sheet allows for extra room so your fitted sheet can completely envelope your mattress. Deep fitted sheets are perfect for thicker mattresses, or for beds with mattress toppers and protectors that add to the overall height.

Here at DUSK, we stock two sizes in double fitted sheets and these are either standard (30cm) or deep (34cm) sizes, so you can be sure there’s a double fitted sheet to suit your mattress size.

Flat sheet vs fitted sheet

So, should I use a flat sheet or fitted sheet?

Now you know the difference between a flat sheet vs a fitted sheet, you might be wondering which is right for you.

While either a flat or fitted sheet can be used to cover your mattress, fitted sheets are often the preferred choice as they're easier to slip over and secure in place thanks to their elasticated corners. So, if you do choose to sleep with a flat sheet, remember to smooth it out and tuck it in, so it’s ready for you to climb straight in at night.

And actually, many people decide to use both for even more comfort! Once your fitted sheet is in place, layer your flat sheet on top, followed by your duvet and you're ready for the ultimate night's sleep.

What type of flat sheet and fitted sheets should I choose?

As with all types of bed linen, you should always select quality material that is durable, breathable, and easily washable. And both our flat and fitted sheets fit this category!

As all DUSK bed linen uses the best materials, you’re guaranteed a sound night’s sleep and an easy wash. You can find our fitted and flat sheets in cotton, cotton percale, or cotton sateen, and our fitted sheets are also available in a brushed cotton or smooth blend of linen and cotton.

If you’re wondering which is right for you when comparing flat sheets vs fitted sheets, our cotton sateen has a luxurious sheen and silky finish, whereas cotton percale is woven to provide a matte appearance. Your personal style preference should help you to decide which type of DUSK cotton bed sheet to choose.

How do I put my flat sheet and fitted sheets on the bed?

Now you’re settled on the flat sheet vs fitted sheet debate, you’re probably wondering how you put these on your bed.

Well, because a flat sheet is just a sheet of fabric, it’s super easy to use. To put a flat sheet on your bed, simply lay it gently over your mattress, smoothing out any wrinkles, and tuck the edges safely underneath the mattress.

And when it comes to putting a fitted sheet on your bed, it’s easier to start with one bottom corner. Tuck the first corner of your fitted sheet safely under the mattress, moving onto the one directly next to it, before carefully guiding your fitted sheet up to the top to tuck in the last two corners.

How do I care for my flat sheet and fitted sheets?

Lastly, It’s important to carefully clean, fold and store your bed sheets, so they’re always ready for use and kept safe in the meantime.

Folding a flat sheet is relatively straight forward but folding a fitted sheet can be a little bit trickier. So, let’s look at how to fold a flat sheet vs a fitted sheet to retain that luxurious DUSK comfort for longer.

How to fold a fitted sheet

To fold a fitted sheet, follow these three simple steps:

  1. First make sure you fully smooth out any wrinkles.
  2. Then, fold your fitted sheet in half, tucking the top corners into the bottom corners like a pocket - repeat this step again. You should be left with a rectangular shape in front of you, which you can then fold in half lengthways.
  3. Finally, fold this long rectangle into a square, and you’re done!

All that’s left to do is store your fitted sheet alongside other bedding in your drawers or even in one of our ottoman storage beds

How to fold a flat sheet

It's much easier to fold a flat sheet compared to a fitted sheet, as you can essentially fold it how you would fold other rectangular bed linen or towels. Try to fold your flat sheet so it matches the size of your folded fitted sheet, as this will make it easier to store.

If you’re still unsure how to fold a flat sheet, just follow these steps:

  1. Grab the two top corners of the flat sheet, one corner in your left hand and the other in your right.
  2. Bring the two corners together, then fold the top corners down onto the bottom corners.
  3. Keep folding the flat sheet over until you’ve reached the right size for storage.
