How To Make The Most Comfortable Bed

04 Mar 2021

Whether you’re about to dive into a book or are getting ready to hit the hay for a proper night’s sleep, there’s nothing quite like snuggling beneath the covers of a cosy bed for an evening of peaceful sleep.

And, from choosing cool and calming colours for a truly cosy bedroom atmosphere to putting together a reading nook filled with beautiful candles and scents, there are endless ways to make your bed more comfortable.

That’s why, here at DUSK, we have come up with some cosy bedroom ideas to help you create your perfect comfy bed for sleeping and reading. After all, we all deserve a snug sanctuary!

1. Use colour for a relaxing atmosphere

Colour is one of the most important aspects when creating a comfortable bedroom space. And in our opinion, using whites and warm neutrals will create a crisp, clean, and comfy bedroom atmosphere.

To soften a white interior into a cosy haven, we recommend incorporating warm natural materials, such as wood, linen, rattan, and wool.

You can also choose luxury white linen bedding and pair it with a neutral knitted wool throw to create a properly cosy bed. These throws not only make your bed more comfortable, but they make for cosy reading companions when losing yourself in a novel!

You can also add a splash of dark grey to add to the relaxing atmosphere, whether that’s by adding accents or eye-catching feature walls. You can also balance the dark grey with black and white artwork or mix up the shades with indoor potted plants and pink cushions and throws.

2. Make the bedroom dark for sleeping

There are tons of myths around sleep-inducing hacks, but putting up blackout blinds to block any unwanted light is a sure-fire way to get a good night’s sleep. That’s because darkness causes your brain to produce the natural sleep aid hormone melatonin, which makes your bed feel more comfortable. However, if you don’t want to change your curtains or you’re a lover of natural light, then you can use an eye mask while you sleep instead.

We don’t just use our bed for sleeping though - we also use it as a place to relax and unwind during the day. And one way to help your brain and body relax is to introduce ambient lighting that makes your bed feel more comfortable and cosy. For example, the soft flicker of a candle or the warming glow of a bedside lamp is the perfect finishing touch to any relaxing space!

3. Build a cosy bedroom reading nook

Nothing is cosier than burying yourself in a captivating book. So, to make a comfy bedroom reading nook, all you need is a bit of space and a touch of creativity for the magic to work.

Choose the area you want - corners work best, so you can snuggle up and get cosy. Grab a beanbag chair, an accent armchair, or even just some comfy pillows or cushions to sit on. You’ll also want a place to pop your cup of tea and perhaps one of those warming lamps we spoke about before.

For a truly calming bedroom reading nook, fill the space with comfy accents, such as cosy knitted throws and crotched wall hangings. Now you can unwind in your reading nook before you get cosy in bed for the ultimate night’s sleep!

4. Swap technology for books

Before we move on to creating a comfy bed, it’s important you give yourself enough time for your brain and body to relax before you go to sleep. To do this, try replacing your favourite comfort show with reading a couple pages or chapters of a book.

There are several studies showing people who spend time watching TV, playing on their phone, or using a laptop before bed tend to get less sleep. So, why not give a book a go!

Another great way to get cosy before bed is to reflect on the day you’ve had in a journal or you can try meditation.

Spend time in your new cosy bedroom for the reasons it should be used – relaxation –and keep the binge watching to the living room. You’ll be thankful for it after the best night’s sleep!

5. Buy a mattress topper for an extra comfy bed

Now for the main event – how to make a comfy bed.

There are tons of ways to make a bed more comfortable, and while we think you deserve the lush feeling of a new mattress, mattress toppers work just as well. That’s because a mattress topper not only prolongs the life of your mattress by reducing pressure on the springs, but it also provides additional support and comfort while you sleep.

For the ultimate relaxing experience, treat yourself to the crème de la crème of mattress toppers – a feather and down mattress topper! The natural filling is breathable, helping regulate body temperature, and adds an extra layer of sumptuous softness to your cosy bed.

Alternatively, a microfibre feels like down mattress topper is just as soft and is hypoallergenic as well. This means it’s perfect for those who suffer with allergies, keeping runny noses and watery eyes at bay and letting yourself get comfy in

6. Pile on the pillows

The cherry on top of any cosy bed, we are of course talking about pillows.

When you snuggle into your brand new cosy linen bedding after unwinding with a book in your reading nook, the last thing you want is for your cosy bed experience to be ruined by a lumpy, bumpy, old pillow.

There are several different options for the fill of a pillow, each changing in weight, firmness, and overall feel. To find the perfect match for you, read our guide on how to choose the perfect pillow.

Lastly, to make the most of your comfortable bed, we encourage you to go wild with the decorative cushions. Nothing is cosier than a bedroom that reflects exactly who you are!

7. Don’t forget the scent

And now, last but by no means least, let’s talk about how scent can make a bed more comfortable.

Essential oils like rose or geranium can help relieve anxiety and stress, while jasmine and bergamot will leave you feeling energised for the day. However, lavender is perhaps the best scent for getting cosy in bed, due to its calming and soothing effects.

Lighting a candle with your scent of choice is always a good option, but for a safer method of infusing these soothing scents into your bedroom is to use a luxury diffuser.

So, there you have it, the ultimate guide to creating the most comfortable bed possible! We’d love to see how you create your perfect relaxing bedroom, share your inspiration with us on Facebook or Instagram. For more cosy bedroom tips, check out our DUSK blog
