Creating a space that feels cosy, inviting, and uniquely yours is key when designing your home - though it’s often easier said than done. In recent years, the Danish concept of hygge decor has become a focus in interior design, emphasising comfort, warmth, and life’s simple pleasures. Jade Crooks, our Commercial Director at DUSK.com, shares her top tips for creating a warm atmosphere in your bedroom. Ready to create your homely haven? Let’s get started.
Switch up your sheets
As the nights get colder, we often think about changing our duvet's tog, but don’t forget the benefits of upgrading your bedding too. Jade recommends, “For the winter months - when cosiness is needed the most - a thicker, good-quality duvet cover with a high thread count could help regulate your body temperature and keep you warm while adding elegance to the room.” Soft, luxurious sheets aren’t just for looks - they’re the secret to a restful night’s sleep.
Embrace the luxury of layers
A room can feel instantly more welcoming with the right layers. Soft throws, plush cushions, and textured bedding all help to create a cosy atmosphere. Whether you love faux mohair, knitted throws, or faux fur, layering your bed with different textures adds both warmth and style. And don’t forget cushions - they’re a great way to introduce pops of colour and personality into the room.
Jade says to keep an eye out for “boucle, waffle, knitted, and fluffy home accessories to incorporate into your bedroom design.” It is worth investing in the finishing details to make a space feel more homely but beware, you might find it hard to leave your cosy bed in the morning!
Don’t be bored by your headboard
Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, so it’s important to consider its impact on the room’s ambience. For example, a thin metal bed frame gives a completely different vibe to our Madison Ottoman bed with a plush headboard. Introducing a boucle or velvet headboard to your room provides extra character and elevates your space. With colours ranging from berry and burnt orange to green and teal, there’s a headboard to suit any style.
Get your lighting right
The people who shout, ‘Turn the big light off!’ have got it right this time. Arguably one of the most important factors in creating a welcoming bedroom is figuring out your lighting. A cold, white ceiling light is never going to create the same homely feel as a warm lamp.
Avoid harsh, overhead lighting and opt for warm-toned lightbulbs to create a cosy atmosphere. Consider picking lamps with interesting materials, like our gold or rattan options, to add texture and a decorative touch to your room. Jade added, "Candles are also a great way of adding tranquil, warm light to any bedroom.” Scents like lavender, vanilla, or sandalwood can elevate the calmness in your room even further.
Add warmth with rugs
If your bedroom has wooden floors, a rug is a quick fix for adding warmth, both visually and physically. There’s nothing better than sinking your feet into a soft, textured rug when you get out of bed.
Depending on your personal style, you could choose a more natural hand-woven rug or opt for a bold pattern like our diamond Daria Berber rug. No matter what design you prefer, having extra texture in your room can have a big impact on the character and comfort of a space.
Thick curtains are worth it
When it’s dark and chilly outside, being able to shut the world off with thick curtains is a way to make a room immediately cosier. Not only do they help trap in warmth, but they also create a cocooning effect that instantly makes a room feel more snug.
If your bedroom feels large and bare, curtains can add the warmth and texture that you’re missing. Although not usually the first homeware item that is considered in room decor, you can also use curtains as a way of injecting colour and patterns into your space.
Calming colours for cosy vibes
Colour is one of the most powerful tools in interior design, and using the right shades can set the mood for your bedroom. Opt for rich, deep colours to give your room an extra cosy feel, like navy, plum, or forest green. If you prefer a less dramatic look, explore more neutral warm colours like beige or taupe. Pops of warm shades, including terracotta and earthy blue can help to bring depth to your room. You could accessorise with these colours through throws, curtains, or artwork to bring everything together.
Bring the outdoors in
Indoor plants can add a touch of nature to your bedroom, improve air quality, and create a calming atmosphere. If you’re worried about keeping your house plants alive, you could explore adding artificial plants to your space.
In addition to greenery, introducing natural materials like wood, rattan, and jute can add warmth and personality. The organic feel of wood complements various interiors and personal styles. Think wooden bedroom furniture, rattan baskets, or jute rugs to soften the room and give it an organic, lived-in feel.
Make it personal
A bedroom without personal touches can feel a little cold. To make it truly yours, incorporate items that reflect your own style and interests. This could include family photos, travel souvenirs, or artwork that you love. The concept of hygge is about enjoying life’s simple pleasures, so don’t worry about creating a perfectly curated space. Focus instead on making it a space you enjoy being in.
Enjoy your inviting space
By following these tips, you can transform your bedroom into a cosy and inviting retreat where you can relax and recharge. Remember, the most important thing is to create a space that feels comfortable, inviting, and personal to you.
