How do I furnish a dining room?

Design a divine dining room with our simple tips.

Consider function

Will it be reserved for formal occasions and parties, used for everyday eating, or even double as a home office? This will help to inform the style that will work best for you.

Colour scheme

A dark and sophisticated dining room is wonderful if the space is reserved for occasional dinner parties, whilst a light and airy space is ideal for rooms used every day.

Measurements

The dining table and chairs are, of course, the most important feature of any dining room. Measure your space carefully to understand what size and shape of table will be best. You want a table that fills out the room enough to not leave an awkwardly vast amount of empty space whilst still ensuring you have clear and comfortable pathways for walking.

Styling

You can then add chairs. Designs which match your dining room will create a smart and cohesive look, whilst ones that clash, such as black chairs around a white table, can be strikingly stylish. Or, instead, break with tradition and opt for dining benches instead. This creates an even more intimate dining experience, as well as space, since they can be entirely stowed beneath the table.

Arrangement

Arranging your table and chairs in the centre of the room is a traditional and timeless choice. In a large dining room, you can then fill out the edges of the space with elegant sideboards and shelves where crockery and cutlery can be kept.

Or instead, place your dining table and chairs in one cosy corner. This frees up the rest of the space for after-dinner seating, such as an L-shaped sofa

For the finishing touch, top off your dining chairs with seat cushions to eat in complete comfort.

How to Style a Living Room

Wondering how to decorate a living room like a designer, but not quite ready to commit to the designer price tag? Follow these simple steps to elevate your living room:

  • - Choose a suitable style and layout.
  • - Have a focal point.
  • - Pick a complementary colour scheme.
  • - Select appropriate seating.
  • - Create the right mood with lighting.
  • - Invest in high quality technology.
  • - Decorate with some accessories.

What makes a living room classy?

Using a few smaller accessories in luxe materials is a favourite designer trick to give a room a more glamorous feel. Options include stylish storage cabinets, modern TV stands, gorgeous coffee tables and console dressing tables.

For furnishing touches, think coasters, trays and candlesticks, ideally in high-end finishes such as gold, marble, crystal or mirror. Pretty much any small accent with a shiny surface will effortlessly transform your living room.
