How to Wash A Bedspread
Bedding that is clean and fresh is essential when you’re wanting the most premium night’s sleep. This includes every element, from your pillowcases and duvet covers to your bedspread. Although you may not wash your bedspread as often as other parts of your bedding, this can easily harbour allergens such as dust mites, so it’s important to know how to care for it.
Washing your bedspread every 4-6 months will help keep those allergens at bay as well as help to give you the best night’s sleep. However, due to the size and materials, we all know that washing a bedspread isn’t quite as simple as throwing your duvet cover and pillowcases in the washing machine.
Our experts at DUSK have come together to give you tips on how to wash your bedspread.
Always read the label
Before you throw your bedspread in the washing machine, make sure you check the label for the manufacturer's washing instructions. If the label says to “dry clean only” we suggest that it’s best to follow this advice and leave it to the professionals. Here at DUSK, all of our bedspreads are machine washable on a low temperature. However, there are only a few designs that can be put in the tumble dryer and we always recommend line drying as the preferable option.
Use the right size washing machine
When it comes to washing your bedspread, the size of the machine is crucial. For the best results, we recommend that you always ensure there is plenty of space for the bedspread to move while it’s being washed. If it’s too large for the washing machine, it’s likely to prevent your bedspread from being cleaned properly.
If you find that it’s a little bit of a tight squeeze, the best option is to use a large commercial washer at your local launderette. While your washing machine may be able to hold 7kg, commercial washing machines are often much larger, with machines 10kg and above for handling larger items like bedspreads.
Choose appropriate laundry detergent and washing cycle
When you’re choosing a laundry detergent, make sure you opt for one that is gentle and safe to use on delicate materials. It’s recommended that you do not use a fabric conditioner on a duvet as it can prevent it from drying properly. We also recommend that you check the care label before washing your bedspread and set your machine on the gentle or delicate cycle. By washing on a cool or warm cycle, this will protect the colour and fabrics, keeping your bedspread looking new for longer. If possible, choose a cycle that includes an extra rinse to help to make sure all the detergent is removed completely.
How to dry your bedspread
If the care label states that your bedspread can be put in the dryer, we recommend that you dry on a low heat setting to avoid any damage. It’s also a great idea to periodically stop your drying and take the bedspread out to fluff it up — this will help to keep the filling evenly distributed as well as ensure it will dry evenly.
When drying your bedspread, consider using dryer balls. There are several options on the market that will stop your bedding clumping together when it’s in the tumble dryer. However, we always recommend following the drying instructions on your care label.
DUSK’s top tips to keep your bedspread looking and feeling its best
- Occasionally put your bedspread and blankets on the washing line outside to allow them to air out — this will keep it feeling fresher for longer!
- Shake it out often to help it keep that luxuriously lofty feel.
- You can gently vacuum your bedspread in order to stop a build up of dust and dirt.
- When not in use, ensure you store them in a well ventilated area to avoid mildew.
- Use a lint roller to pick up animal hairs and fluff after your cheeky pet decides to take a nap.
