How do I decorate my living room?

The first and most important thing to bear in mind when decorating a living room is the measurements. Measure the entire room, including any little alcoves and corners, to ensure that any gorgeous new pieces of furniture you buy will fit perfectly.

Once your measurements are taken, you can start thinking about how you’d like your lounge to look. This includes picking a colour scheme and a style, such as traditional, contemporary or mid-century modern.

When picking out your stunning new pieces of furniture, we advise starting with the biggest pieces, such as your lounge sofa, first. Then move on to items like armchairs, coffee tables, end tables and TV units until you finally end with accessories for those finishing touches.

How do I arrange my living room furniture?

When it comes to arranging living room furniture, there are all sorts of ways you can mix and match to your heart’s content.

Bringing your sofa and chairs away from the wall and into the centre of the room can make a small living room look larger whilst creating a cosy and intimate seating space. Or in a large living room, placing all of the furniture on the edges of the same rug can unify your seating beautifully.

If you plan on making your living room a space for conversation, a symmetrical layout is ideal. With two sofas mirroring each other, you’ll have a wonderful layout for chatting with friends while creating visually appealing lines in the home.

Or, if your lounge will be more of an entertainment space, angle furniture around a TV unit. Having a main lounge sofa and a corner lounge sofa arranged in an L shape is wonderful for cosy movie nights but is still a comfortable seating arrangement for chatting if guests pop over.

With large living rooms, why not do both? Create a conversation area and TV area at opposite ends of the room, with the back of a sofa defining the zones.

How do I furnish a long living room?

A long and slender living room isn’t the easiest to furnish, but fear not. Our tips can make your lengthy lounge look wonderful.

The first top tip is to avoid placing furniture against one wall. This can make the room look longer and thinner than it actually is, as well as create a rigid appearance. Placing sofas opposite or diagonal to one another creates a much fuller look. Or, if you’d still like to have two sofas against one wall, placing an accent or armchairs on the other wall can balance out the space.

Accent chairs, armchairs and pouffes gracefully break up the room. Ottoman pouffes are a great choice as these also serve as storage to de-clutter the room, opening up more floor space.

Our final tip is to consider painting the end walls of your lounge a darker colour. This creates a contouring effect, making the living room look shorter and wider than it actually is.
