You’ve scrolled through countless styles and finally found it - the perfect sofa for your home. You can already picture cosy nights in, movie marathons, and Sunday naps, but then the thought hits: will it even fit through the door?

It’s a common worry, and one we hear from plenty of our customers. Sofa shopping should be exciting, not stressful, which is exactly why we’ve pulled together this handy guide to help. With a few quick checks, you’ll know for sure if your chosen sofa will fit smoothly into your home.

Say goodbye to delivery day anxieties, and hello to putting your feet up in style.

Why measuring for a sofa delivery matters

There’s nothing worse than delivery day disappointment. If our delivery partners are unable to bring your sofa into your home due to size restrictions, a return fee will be charged. That means more waiting, more hassle, and the need to re‑order a sofa that will fit.

The good news is that our sofas arrive in carefully sized boxes, making access much easier than manoeuvring a fully‑built piece of furniture. By checking the box dimensions on your chosen product page (under Details & Dimensions), you'll know exactly what to expect.

A few quick measurements now save time, money, and stress later.

How to measure your home

Here’s a step-by-step guide to measuring your doorways, hallways, and stairwells:

1. Your front door (and any other entry doors)

Height: Measure from the floor to the top of the door frame.

Width: Measure the narrowest point of the doorway. If there are fixed doorstops, measure between them too.

Diagonal: Measure diagonally from the bottom corner of the door frame to the opposite top corner. This often allows for more clearance when tilting a box.

2. Hallways & corridors

Width: Measure the narrowest point of any hallway or corridor that the sofa will need to pass through. Don't forget radiators or light fixtures that might jut out.

Turning space: If there are corners, check the available length from the corner to the opposite wall. Make sure the longest side of your box can pivot around.

3. Stairways & landings

Height & width: Measure the width of the staircase itself. Also, measure the height from the bottom step to the ceiling directly above it.

Ceiling height on landings: If your stairs have a landing, measure the ceiling height above the landing.

Turning space (L-shaped or U-shaped stairs): This is where it gets tricky! Measure the length of the landing plus the width of the stairs leading in and out. Picture your sofa box making the turn - length and depth both matter here.

Your handy measurement checklist

  • Front Door Height: ___ cm

  • Front Door Width: ___ cm

  • Front Door Diagonal: ____ cm

  • Hallway 1 Width: ___ cm

  • Hallway 2 Width: ___ cm (if applicable)

  • Staircase Width: ___ cm

  • Staircase Ceiling Height: ___ cm

  • Landing Ceiling Height: ___ cm (if applicable)

  • Narrowest point on route: ___ cm

Don’t forget: compare your measurements against the box dimensions listed for your chosen sofa.

Understanding box vs sofa dimensions

Box dimensions diagram

When browsing our sofas, you’ll notice two sets of dimensions:

  • Sofa dimensions (W x D x H): The finished size of the sofa once assembled.

  • Box dimensions: The size of each delivery box.

Since your DUSK sofa arrives boxed, these are the most important figures to check. For example:

A large 3 seater sofa may measure W: 285 x D: 285 x H: 94cm when assembled.

But it could arrive in 3 delivery boxes that are W: 97 x D: 96 x H: 67cm, which are far easier to manoeuvre through doorways.

You’ll find box dimensions clearly listed under Details & Dimensions on each product page. This info section will also let you know whether you’ll need to fully assemble your sofa or if just the leg attachment is required.

Compact sofa solutions

Measured up and still worried about squeezing your dream sofa inside? Don’t worry, we’ve got options that are more likely to fit through tight door spaces and up narrow stairs.

Small sofas

Our collection of 2 seater sofas is perfect for cosier living rooms or apartments. These smaller sofas offer all the comfort and style of their larger counterparts, but give you more wiggle room when trying to get them through the front door.

Take our Shoreditch 2 Seater Sofa, for example. Packaged in a box measuring W: 52 x D: 88 x H: 149cm, it’s slim enough to glide through most doors and hallways. Just be mindful of measuring tight corners, its taller height means you may need to pivot the box as you move it.

Modular sofas

The ultimate flexible choice! Modular sofas arrive in individual sections (like corner pieces, armless units, and ottomans), which are delivered in different boxes. Whether you’re after a chaise like our Manhattan sofa, a U-shaped sofa like Brooklyn, or a large 3 seater like Boston, choosing a modular sofa means it arrives in manageable sections, ready to be carried into the room of your choice.

You’ll need to assemble them once they’re in your home, but that’s actually a big advantage. Smaller, lighter boxes are far easier to get through tight hallways, staircases, and doorways than one large sofa.

It also means you can get your new sofa into the exact room you want without any delivery‑day stress. And once everything’s put together, you’ll have the same spacious comfort and style as a traditional sofa, just without the struggle of trying to squeeze it in.

DUSK sofa delivery

At DUSK, we aim to make your delivery as smooth as possible. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Professional delivery team: Our trusted delivery partners are experienced in navigating various home layouts.

  • Pre-delivery communication: You'll receive updates regarding your delivery slot, allowing you to prepare.

  • Access requirements: While our delivery teams are fantastic, it's essential that you've measured accurately to ensure the sofa will fit. They cannot remove doors, windows, or dispose of packaging.

Troubleshooting tips for tricky entrances

Sometimes, even with all the measurements, you might face a particularly challenging delivery. Here are a few troubleshooting tips to try:

Tilt and turn

Some sofa boxes will need to be tilted on their side or end to fit around tight corners. Understanding the sofa’s depth and height is key here. Practice with a cardboard box cut to your box’s dimensions if you’re really worried!

Properly clear a path

Move rugs, plants, lamps, or hallway tables that could restrict space. The straighter and clearer the path, the easier the job for your delivery team.

Use protective covers

Cover door frames or corners with blankets or towels to avoid scuffs. This gives you confidence to manoeuvre without worrying about knocks.

Consider professional help (for extreme cases)

With some awkwardly built homes (e.g., very narrow spiral staircases in older properties), even careful measuring might not cut it. If that's the case, a specialist furniture delivery service could be the only answer. Some offer window removals or even external hoisting, but it’s usually a last resort as it comes with extra cost.

With the measuring done, all that’s left is the fun part, choosing your dream sofa. From cosy 2 seater sofas for snug corners to spacious chaise styles made for stretching out, our full sofa collection has something for every home.
